Topic: 2 '39 PU Axle Questions Please

Pardon the basics here but I have 2 questions that have come up during my rear axle rebuild. 1) should not there be an outer rolling bearing between the gease seal and the hub? I don't see one and the axle feels "loose" 2) once the proper gasket size is determined, are the axle housing to banjo joint dry? No gasket sealer? Thanks very much - i want to do it corrrectly.

John, just the large bearing in the hub. The axle does feel loose before the hub goes on.

The gaskets go on dry. A handy tip is to have two sets of gaskets, one set to determine thickness, and one fresh set for installation. Make sure you have no burrs on either surface. Also, it is important to use Permatex Red on the banjo bolts, or every darn one of them will leak. Use a wire brush to remove the excess sealant after you snug them tight.
