Topic: Vinegar vs. Evapo-rust for block cleaning

I just competed a scientific test comparing plain vinegar and Evapo-rust for dissolving rust and other corrosion from the inside of a block. I posted the report on the Ford Barn here for anyone interested: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?p=766578#post766578

  Old Henry,

Interesting testing you performed here. Any follow-ups as to end results? Will this stuff have an impact on aluminum heads? I see there is a competitive product at www.rust911.com which is cheaper and comes in concentrate form. Have you heard of or had any experience with this stuff? The idea of adding this stuff to your cooling system and driving around knowing it's cleaning the rust from your engine block is very tempting.....MG

I have Skip's water pumps, had the original radiator cleaned [not rodded] ran 5 gallons of vinegar for 2 weeks, used Old Henry's block flush method and some pretty ugly stuff came out. Filled with Prestone & distilled water [50/50 mixture] and Purple Ice. The 41 was going to the top of the heat indicator and now stops at what I'll call the 3/4 level, even on a hot Texas day. Now I can ruminate on something else.

I had not heard of Rust911 before you mentioned it. Looks like the same as Evapo-Rust just in concentrated form. All of the manufacturer descriptions I read didn't mention anything about reusing the product as Evapo-Rust does. Being able to re-use Evapo-Rust may make it as economical in the long run if Rust911 can't be re-used. Those are my thoughts.
