Topic: 40 Ford distributor question.

  I am having problems with the dist and coil on my 40 Ford, current is going into the dist but not coming out the spark plug wires. I took the dist off to inspect it. When I twist the key drive on the back and watch the shaft inside the housing I see slack between the driving shaft and the rotor that contacts the plug wires. Is this slack normal or do I have a bad part? Where could the spark being going to ground?

  Sounds more like a bad coil. There is some slack in the distributor, but usually not enough to create a no spark problem.

  I agree that you may have a bad coil, but disagree about the play between the rotor and the shaft. There should be no play between the rotor and the shaft.

The rotor and / or the shaft should be replaced. I suggest that you send the distributor and coil to Skip Haney for repair. He has the equipment to check out and repair both items.

  FYI, I installed a new dist shaft and rotor and it started right up.

  I could have told you how to tighten up that slop w/o any cost what so ever.After market rotors are the worst for this.Genni ford ones are the best. ken ct. 1-203-260-5945 cell.

  Tom thank you for all your assistance , on my 41. Hope I haven't been a pain. In the neck with all questions. I have an original distributor for the 41. Thinking I should send it out for overhaul and timing. And replace the MALLORY WHICH I AM STILL TRYING TO GET WORKING BUT USING COMMON SENSE ONLY. ONE POINT SPARKS THE OTHER DOES NO ANY HELP. ON GETTING OLD DISTRIBUTOR TIMED WOULD BE A GREAT HELP. JOHN

  i'd try another condenser. frank scheidt has some good articles about condensers in the V8 times.
any spark at the points is energy lost before it gets to the plugs and is a sign of a bad [or the wrong size] condenser.
the points on the driver's side of the dist shouldn't spark at all.
