Hi guys.New to this great club. I have a new toy, 51 club coupe,52merc eng,3sp non od. The shifter shifts ok, but has about 5" free play when in gear. The problem appears to be inside the column. I had my wife move the shifter while I held the arms to the trans. Moves about 5". MY 56f100 is no where near this loose.Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Jeff

There are several places that could be the cause. Have someone work the shift lever while you observe the linkage. Places to concentrate include the levers on the steering column. There is a pin that engages the levers as the lever is moved up and toward the driver.if either that the pin, or the slots in the levers is worn, they may need replacement. Watch the linkage to see if the rubber end grommets are sloppy. They can easily be replaced. Check the levers on the transmission side plate. If the levers are securely fastened to their shafts, the levers and/or the side plate could be faulty. Finally, be sure the shift lever behind the steering wheel isn't badly worn.The part that engages the shift tube is prone to wear. Don't be surprised if more than one of theses are at fault. The shift mechanism amplifies movement, so any small wear can cause your problem. From your description my best guess is that the shift tube, itself, is badly worn. They seldom, if ever, are lubricated and get a lot of wear. This message was edited by supereal on 9-26-13 @ 4:17 PM

Thanks for your reply. This weekend I'll have some time to check out your ideas. I did order a grommets repair kit from C&G. Arrived today. I'm thinking its that pin or slots inside the column. Will know more this weekend. I'll let you know. Thanks Jeff

I got a much later start on checking your suggestions.My brother came by to work the shift lever while I wstched the linkage. Shift lever moves quite a bit,linkage does not. I did check the arms on the transmission side cover, not loose. I did replace the rubber gromments as they were ourn out. This helped some. Shifting while driving seems more positive. Gene(brother) brought his complete steering box,column, linkage and wheel out of his 51 woodie. Tomorrow I'm going to take his apart to check those slots and pin.

Oh, I forget to check the lever behind the steering wheel. It may be worn also? I have a new rubber cone shaped piece for the shift lever to the shift tube. Am I understanding you correctly. I'll install that also. Thanks Jeff

Yes, the sh*ter lever may well be worn, as well. They are a bit tricky to disassemble. The part of the column that is usually badly worn in the shift tube, particlarly the portion that holds the linkage levers.

Found a little time to get back to my shifter issues. I installed the new grommet on the shift lever (the old one just about fell apart) along with the new pins and spring. Much tighter now. However, there is still too much play at the bottom of the shift tube. I took my brother's apart to expose the pin and slots. Interesting design! This one is very solid. I'm guessing this is where the rest of my looseness lies? Thanks very much. Jeff ..
