Topic: 1939 Ford Radio fuses (2)

alier    -- 09-25-2013 @ 8:09 AM
I have just had a Philco radio repaired for my '39 "woodie" and have placed the two fuses in a place where I won't forget but yes I have forgotten where that special place is/was. Question: What is the amperage and size of the two buss fuses? (6 volt, positive ground)
There are advantages to getting old but I can remember them right now.
Thanks,
Anthony

The current draw of a six volt vibrator radio is 7.2 amps, so a 15 amp fuse is adequate and safe in most cases, and will usually fit the fuse holder.

I'd like to add one thing if I may - If you have the correct fuse holder be certain to wrap the fuse in electricians tape if you are absent the authentic cardboard sleeve that was originally placed over the fuse.

Thanks to both supereall and kubes40 for the feedback. I will purchase a 15 amp fuse and because I'm missing the cardboard tube I will wrap the fuse in electrical tape as suggested.

A better solution to prevent the fuse contacting the metal fuse holder is shrink tubing. This is available at Radio Shack in many sizes. Buy the size that just fits over the fuse. Electrical tape tends to spread the adhesive all over the inside of the fuse holder, giving you an intermittent contact or a high resistant connection.

  TomO...
I have the shrink tubing that fits over the fuse but should I leave it loosely fitted or add a little heat to shrink it around the fuse so it fit snugly?
Thanks,
Anthony
