There is no "VIN" as used today, only a production serial number. This is valuable only in gaining an approximate time of the year the vehicle was produced, no more. They can be hard to find. The only one accessable without removing the body from the frame is on the top of the left frame rail somewhere between the front crossmember and the firewall. There are at least two other places on the frame rail under the body. Originally, a similar number was stamped on the transmission above the inspection port, but the odds of having the original transmission are slim and none after decades. This is a frequent question. Most of us wish there was more we could learn about our cars, but for the most part, it just isn't so.

Just to add to what Supereal has said. Ford used a sequential serial number for the engine. Because they assumed you would probably change out the engine they stamped it on top of the transmission case just above the little inspection door. When the engine was installed in a frame the number was transferred to the left frame rail somewhere between the radiator and the firewall, usually near the front crossmember. It is used as the identification number for your vehicle but does not give any of the build code information that we are used to on modern vehicles. Be very careful looking for it as the number may be very faint and easily lost by aggresive scr*ping or sanding.

Ronnie, The number on my 48 is on the top of the drivers side frame rail between the radiator and the front cross member. Like super says, look all along the frame rail. Also heed 42wagons caution about cleaning the crud off of the frame rail.

The best reference for your car is the Club's excellent 41-48 book. Anyone owing a Ford of those years should have one. It will tell you all you need to know, and then some!
