I have a 39 coupe, 85 hp. Assuming the temp gauge works properly, the engine runs very hot - the red indicator is very near the top of the gauge. I put an infrared gun on the head covers once this summer, and the temp seemed to range from around 195 to 215. I want to get the car to run cooler, and think I should start simple. One suggestion has been to flush the block (and radiator) with fresh water. So can I simply detach the upper and lower radiator hoses, and run water from a garden hose in thru the top and out the bottom? Or are there other steps/precautions to take? Thanks.

From Supereal - sent to me by mistake: "First, using a thermometer in the radiator top tank, confirm that you have a cooling problem. Dash gauges are not precision instruments. While flushing the block may be helpful, it is secondary to having the radiator professionally cleaned. Be sire your water pump belt is correct and properly tensioned. Most cooling problems are radiator related. Replacements are expensive, of course.
