HELP!!! I am looking for the steering box end plate and tube for my 1939 Ford Tudor Sedan. I broke the tube off the plate. I already tried to shorten it and JB Weld it but it broke again and the tube is not in good shape. If anybody has one for sale or knows where I can locate one I would be forever grateful. Thanks in advance. Ron

Just how bad is the tube? Can it be turned to the opposite end? I have found silver soldering works very well for this repair. Of course, you'll need to be certain the parts are super clean prior to soldering.

You can buy new brass tubing at a hobby shop that's close enough to original tube and solder it to the plate. Many of these come out of the steering box already broken so not too likely that someone will just have one laying around their shop, but you never know. Try placing a want ad on the here and Fordbarn. Also, you might send a pm to Ken ct, a member here and on Fordbarn, to see if he has one. He did have one at the last swap meet I attended in May, where he was vending. May still have it. Worth a try. John

Yes i have 1 but it fits a 36 not sure if it fits a 39,might be diff. Ken ct. cell 1-203-260-5945

The smaller one in the picture is the one I need. The bigger one is the wrong one I had bought off ebay. Ken ct. is this the one you have??

If you look in the Ford Chassis Parts book 40-3597 is for 33-36. It has a larger diameter brass tube than what you need and will not fit into the 39 steering shaft, the mounting is also incorrect. The brass tube for the early 40-3597 can be found in many hardware stores. You need 78-3597-B for 37-39. If the tube is cracked where it meets the mounting base it can be repaired but you want to use low temperature silver solder. You can get this at many hardware stores. The mounting base is plated and the plating need to be removed for the solder to adhere to the base. Use a propane torch to heat the metal (outside)and keep the torch on one side of the mounting while you solder the other (inside) If the replacement you bought has a tube that will work you can cut it off and insert it through your base and solder it in place, The extra long length of the tube is nice.
