I've noticed that Pertronix now makes a 6 volt electronic distributor conversion kit. They supposedly fit inside the existing front mount distributor. I know from a strict judging perspective they would result in a points deduction, but if they can't be detected.... Has anyone tried them? Is there anything about them that can be detected? Yes, parts of the conversion are apparent. I've always wondered why there is a necessity to "improve" the most reliable part of the Ford engine. In most cases, if the distributor is set up on a machine with high quality parts, it normally lasts for many years of the kind of driving old cars nomally receive.

David, the Pertronix systems have been unreliable in the past. I agree that it is very hard to improve on the Ford dual point system and they are very reliable. Tom

FWIW, I ran a Pertronix conversion on my '40 for five years. It ran great until it died without warning one Sunday afternoon. Have since gone back to points, and frankly I can't tell the difference in performance. If you decide to convert, my recommendation is to carry a spare distributor with points, just in case.
