I have a 1940 Ford with a 59AB engine, is there any ID number on the engine that will establish the year of the engine. I have a Model A that has the serial number on the block that I can lookup the year it was made. Is the 59 AB the "stock" engine for that year? Thanks,

The serial numbers of the V-8 era vehicles was on the transmission and on the frame. There were no serial numbers on the blocks. The 59AB engine was used in the 45-48 cars and trucks. The correct engine for a 40 Ford would have 2 bulges above the oil pan gasket for core plugs and you should be able to balance a pencil on the space behind the timing cover. Tom
