What are the the four threaded 3/8" holes on the front of the block on either side of the timing gear cover?

All 221,239,256 32-53 V8 blocks have these threaded holes. Their purpose was to allow
any full-sized V8 to use the bolt-on 32 front motor mounts. Since the early 221's had their water pumps on the cylinder heads, there needed to be a mounting point for the mounts. Ford simply included them on all later flathead blocks.

  Stroker, thanks for the explanation.

Another use if I remember correctly. In the 59A engine service manual that I have, it shows a cradle bolted to those holes to remove and install the engine in the '38-'47 COE thru the grill opening.

Front motor mounts/water inlets for '34 to '36 also used those four threaded bolt holes. There was a lot of interchangeability purposely designed into these flatheads.
