If you're replacing the entire rear axle assembly (housings, etc.) then you need to know the '46 is about 3/4" wider than the '40. Still, no problem. Use the '40 radius rods with the 46 rear. Place about 5/16" spacer between each rod and axle housing (two places per side) and everything will line up well. That additional width (about 3/8" per side on the car) is hardly noticeable.

The '40 shackles can be used. You'll need to stretch the spring a bit further of course. I have made this swap a number of times. Usually it's for a guy with a later Columbia that doesn't want to spend the money to get the proper '40 overdrive...

The 40 torque tube and drive shaft can easily be installed to the '46 rear assembly.

Seems as though the 42-48 driveshaft is an inch or so longer.
