Topic: 1937 standard coupe 3rd member

I have read my new 1937 ford book cover to cover. Great book! I now am puzzled about a couple of things. The markings on my car for the rear axle are not on the left hand axle housing. They are on the third member in front and below where the torque tube connects. It is stamped verticle "9(underlined)40" and then a #2. Does this mean that it was 4.44 to 1 and then changed to 3.78 to 1?

That boss on the "third member" is where the number was supposed to be found. That's the pinion housing.
It appears you have a 4:44 ratio, pretty typical of a "standard" model in '37.

If you have or had the little 60hp engine in your '37 I would bet you have 4.44:1 R&P gears. 9/40 or 40รท9=4.44. Have no idea what #2 would mean. I have always found the gear ratio numbers stamped on the bottom webbing of the center banjo housing near the flange where the torque tube bolts on. Never heard of these numbers being on the axle housing but then I am sure I have not seen it all.

On page A-47 Appendices of the 1937 Ford Book on 6/25/37 (Buffalo N.Y. Service Letter #88). "To Quickly identify rear axles, the identification numbers added to the regular marking on the differential housing." Refer to chart. On Page A-48 there is a chart. I agree that the 9.40 would indicate a 4.44 to 1 but the #2 according to the chart tells me that it is 9.34 or 3.78 to 1. I have not had it apart as of yet but I think it is 6 spline.
I appreciate any input. Thanks, Ray
