I have an intermittent problem where everything goes dead and I wanted to start checking electrical connections. My first problem is that I can't see where the positive ground wire attaches. I thought it went from the battery terminal and attached to the frame. 1940 sedan. Can anyone tell me where to look?

There is a stud on the firewall, the + battery cable attaches to the stud. It is behind the battery just under the battery hold down bracket. Remove the battery to view.

The previous owner had installed a plastic cover over the Optima battery and I hadn't taken it off or the battery out. Thanks for your help!

We like to install a ground cable from the point where the ground strap meets the firewall to one of the starter mounting bolts. A 12 volt cable with eyelet ends can be used, and is not visible when placed behind the battery. Grounding problems in old cars is a common situation, due to rust, paint, fender welts, etc. This is a simple and inexpensive way to prevent problems.

Supereal's idea is good. I would point out that Henry thought of it first. There are actually two ground straps on a 42 at least. The first is from the battery to the firewall. The second is from the firewall to the top of the engine. Could be fastened to either a head stud or an intake manafold bolt. When you think about it the engine mounts are encased in rubber and the bolts through them are a poor ground path.
