Recently purchased a u-joint from Drake. It has ninety thousandths of end play. I called them as this much endplay seemed excessive, but they said they have sold many of these without any problem. Can anyone tell me if this much endplay could cause a problem? Is there some sort of shim or spacer that might be needed? Any help is appreciated!

You didn't mention the year of your car. I assume it is a Ford. There is a spacer washer that goes under the bolt that holds the u-joint to the output shaft of the transmission. It is a Ford part, but I can look up the size if need be. Without the spacer, the u-joint will slide back and forth.

If you have just the U-joint in your hand, there should be no end play. If the joint is installed on the back of the transmission, the play could come from the joint not being tight on the transmission end shaft. The installation of the joint should tighten the output shaft, the final bearing, an oil slinger and the joint, all together. Make sure the bolt AND washer holding the U-joint to the output shaft are tight. It is possible the U-joint does have a problem. If the length of the U-joint that slides over the transmission shaft is short the mounting bolt will not be able to firmly attach all of the components together. If you have the old joint try it on the shaft and see if it gets tight, if it does the new joint most likely is the problem. Take both joints to a machine shop and ask if they could measure the length of the old and new joint. You should not install the u-joint with this play!

The length of the u-joint is the same for all years. The important, and sometimes omitted part, is the spacer, part # B-7095. It looks like a thick washer, and is 1 5/32 outside diameter, 13/32 inside diameter, and 11/64" thick. It goes on the rear side of the u-joint, and is secured by a special pointed bolt, which is 24369-S, 3/8x24 7/8" long. It goes thru a lockwasher, 34847-S, which is 21/32" thick. If you want to see a drawing of the assembly, go to page 305 in the green book. Without that spacer, the u-joint can't be secured properly to the transmission shaft.If you don't have the spacer, you can get it at C&G (800-266-0470) for two bucks.

Thanks for the help! After looking at page 305 of the green book, I think part 34847-S (or the absence thereof) may be the issue. Always appreciate the expert advice. This Forum as saved a lot of aggravation on mistakes. Again, THANKS!!!
