Read with interest the latest article regarding engine oils. Now do I still use non detergent straight oil or change to a detergent oil Car is a 32 model 18 with barn fresh engine intend to run it a while before restoring. Your thoughts best regards

You should stick with the oil that is currently used in the engine until it has been rebuilt. If you start using a detergent in a engine that has been a non-detergent engine, you will start picking up and moving all sorts of materials that have been kept in the valley and oil pan. And possibly damaging a bearing. Now, if you have a fresh re-build, then you can use non-detergent or detergent. That will be your choice.

Non detergent oil is obsolete. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't scrub the inside of your engine, but keeps contaminents in suspension so they can be drained or filtered out, instead of congealing into sludge. Before today's oils, we used to manually scr*pe the sludge out of oil pans and valve galleries. If you do know what kind and brand of oil was used before you got the car, it doesn't hurt to stay with it, but about the only thing non detergent oil is good for today is to fill your oil can.
