  When tightening the connecting rod nuts and the holes
For the cotter pins do not line up after tighten them to
Specification,should you tighten them or back them off
To get them to line up?

  It depends on how close the hole is to the slot in the nut. If it is very close, tighten or loosen the nut to clear for the cotter. If not, tighten the nut until you do. It is always better to be a bit tight than loose. The correct torque for the castellated nuts is 35 to 40 ft lbs, so you have some range to line them up. The self locking nuts require 40-45 lbs.
