I have a 36 ford with a pose 49 flathead V8 the ID number on the block is 32J:4 what do I have? It has a bolt on bell housing and a front distubitor.

Where is the "block number" located? This could simply be a re-builder's stamp. When you say front distributor; is it the 32-48 style, or simply a front "post mount" distributor? As to what it is, about the only significant issue would be if it is a Mercury or a Ford, as the Merc. would have a longer stroke, and therefore a larger displacement. Tell us what the casting marks are on the cylinder heads. The separate bell housing only tells us that it is a 48-53 truck, or 49-53 car engine. Perhaps a photo would help us.

My son has just purchased the car, it is a 36 but the engine is a 49 or later ( I think) the number I listed is a raised casted number on the back of the engine on the right side just behind the head 32J:4. The car has aluminum aftermarket heads and an aftermarket distributer. I am new to this, but I will try to attach a photo

In order to find out what you have, you would most likely need to pull a head, and measure the stroke. There aren't a lot of differences in the 48-53 (truck) and 49-53 (car) engines. Unless there is some compelling reason to "know", or the engine has "issues", this is probably a fools errand. A rough overview of the differences between all Ford flathead engines can be found at
