I am going to use cork for a 1940 Ford fuel pump bowl gasket. Will have to cut the gasket out of the cork. What would be the best sealer for this gasket. Checking on line I found six possible sealers for the gasket: Hylomar, 3bond211, Black Silicon, Permatex Anaerobic, 730 RTV, Permatex #1 & #2 Form-a-Gasket. Does anyone have any experience with these sealers?? ALSO is there a better gasket than cork for this purpose?? Thanks for your help. Radar

It is best not to use RTV, as it dissolves in gas, and can clog jets, etc. If you want to use the cork, just soak it in a bit of gas before installation. You can use a large fuel proof O ring, or make a gasket out of neoprene rubber sheet. If the bowl hanger isn't overtightened, leakage shouldn't be a problem. Cork leaks when it dries out, so very old, stiff cork rings are not much good. Using sealant can make removal for cleaning a problem. Cork gaskets have been used for decades without problems.

You don't use sealant on a bowl gasket, and you can buy one from a supplier. They are all the same from 1928 to 1953. A new one shouldn't require soaking. Richard

Cork deteriorates when it come in contact with Ethanol. Use a rubberized or Neoprene rubber gasket. I have found that the Neoprene gaskets work the best for the glass sediment bowl and the rubberized cork for the stock pump without the glass sediment bowl. Tom

Thanks again for your help. A local V8er had a bowl gasket and I installed that after soaking in gas. No leaks so far. Still some other work on carb to finish installation. Will post later. Radar
