Fred got in last night and I woke up before 5 and did not get much sleep. Went to breakfast with Bob, Jerry and Fred. Arel joined us later. From there it was off to the seminar about babbit and balancing crankshafts. It was interesting but one can only say so much in an hour and there is quite a bit to be said about either of these. If I had to pick one thing I remember the most it was the demonstration with a model showing the harmonics of when a crankshaft gets out of balance. I t was easy to see how this could tear apart bearings. Our next meeting was Meet the President. Ken Bounds gave a great talk on some of the club history and introduced all the past presidents that were in attendance. It really says something when so many people who have served at that level continue to stay so involved. From there it was back to the hotel where I met up with Fred and he was still trying to retrieve his luggage. I said, “Let’s go for a ride.” And off we went to find somewhere to get the oil changed. If fet good to get away from the casino and actually see the lake. Of course there was traffic but at least it was not too hot. Fred was hungry so we stopped at a little hamburger place. The tables were full so we asked to sit with another couple. They said, “Sure.” and we ate lunch together and told them about our trip and they talked about themselves as well. They came out to look at the car after and thanked us for having lunch with them. When you have an interesting guy like Fred with you it is easy to pull this stuff off. I heard a talk by a ranger in the Shenandoah National Park last year and he said to try and eat dinner with a stranger when you go on vacation. Funny the things one never forgets and how strangers can impact our lives as we can others. Anyway I thought we had gone by the place and drove back only to find out we needed to go a few more blocks. I must have something in my subconscious that insists I do this trip twice. We went in, got the oil changed in short order and found out they had done a number of these today. Nothing like rolling into town and turning the “oil change guys” into flathead experts. With that done I returned to the hotel and got the car washed. I figure I must have driven about 3400 miles and have about 3 million bug kills. Not just the outside but also under the hood. Right now the car is about as clean as it was when I left. Except for all that pollen I need to dust out of the inside. There is quite a bit that comes off the pine trees here. From there it was off to the judges’ meeting and then dinner. I really could have passed on it but it is so nice to socialize with some of the great people here. After dinner I went over to the next table to talk with Craig and Annette. Craig is a past president and he said I should consider running for a board position. It is the highest compliment but I am not sure. We left and walked around the concourse looking at some of the cars. Check out the pictures of the black 49 convertible. It was the one used in Rebel without a Cause. It is just as it was when it left the set complete with all the dents and scratches. There is also a 1932 Lincoln that is a pretty original car. So we ended the day with a few car pictures and I am happy to report that Fred’s suitcase finally arrived. I am still riding him about not coming in a day earlier to save some money. I will let up soon though. Seems like we just got here and we have only two days left. Look for some great concourse pics tomorrow. Frank you are still doing a fantastic job on this running dialog and picture taking. You are probably looking forward to goin back to work so you can rest.
