Topic: Body style code

  Where can the body style code for a 1950 ford car be found? I have located the identification number (BoLU135738)but not the body style. This car is for sale and is supposed to be a Crestliner and I want to make sure that it is.

  You need to get a copy of the 1950 Ford Chassis Parts Catalog or a later multi-year Ford chassis catalog. All the plate codes are translated in that book for Ford & cars of this vintage. Mercs used the body books and had patent plates starting in 49.

The shoe box Fords should have a patent plate that gives the body number or style. I know the 52 & later ones did but Im not as certain about the 49 thru 51. If there is no body number on these years then you may never be able to tell if it was a clone or an original Crestliner. If it walks & talks like one then it may be one.

With the VIN number you have you can tell it was a V8 car made for the 50 model year and assembled in Louisville.

Update: I found one owner that mentioned the body information was stamped on the firewall in 1/2" high characters. It can sometimes be difficult to ID the characters unless you really look at them carefully then cross match them to Ford codes of the time. Different assembly plants may have done this differently or in different locations on the firewall.

  The body code for a 1950-1951 Crestliner is 70C.

There should a stamping on the cowl with the body style code, trim code, etc. Here is a link to the data plate information.

The information that you provided decodes:

B = 239 V8 engine
o = 1950
LU = Louisville assembly plant

  Thanks rotorwrench. I just received my V8 times 49-51 ford book, but the info in there says the 1950 starts with a letter combination; are there two codes?

  So where would the body style be located as it is not identified with what I supplied.
