Anyone have info on the correct number of leafs in a great spring on a 48 convertible, I have a n12 leaf but the U bolts seem short, they measure 7 1/4 thanks

The fine Club 41-48 book says that the rear springs on the convertible, tudor and fordor sedans had 12 or 13 leaves in 47-48, one more than 46. The parts catalog shows the U bolts to be either 4.56 or 4.30 inches from the end of the thread to the spring side of the U-bolt. If they held the spring before you removed it, it should be OK. Be sure that the special center tie bolt of the spring is not broken, allowing the spring to expand. When fully tightened, the nuts should be flush with the end of the U-bolt.

Supereal, I purchased a nos 12 leaf 2 years ago and just getting around to change it out, my old one is 12 leaf but the leafs are thinner, the widest point where the center bolt is, is 3/8 of an inch wider. I took out the center bolt. And it is ok. I think my only choice is to remove the. Short top leaf. Thanks for your reply

Almost sounds as if you bought an NORS spring. All of Fords springs were the same thickness per leaf.

Could be, did they put covers on nors springs? This one has covers and were done very well, thanks for the reply

Personally I've never seen covers placed on a replacement (nors) spring.
I have also never seen a Ford (OEM) spring vary in thickness per leaf as you have witnessed.
Hmmm...

If there is one odd ball part I always end up with it. Thanks for your interest .

That's what I would. If the leaves are slightly thicker, you don't need the short one, anyway.

Supereal, did that and bolted up just fine. Thanks
