1940 blocks: • Main bearing journals were enlarged to a nominal 2.099" diameter. • The overall length of the crankshaft was increased to a nominal 22.88". • No hole was present in the top of the clutch housing for an oil filler tube.

If you have the original transmission case that came with the engine it is easy to tell when your engine was made by checking the engine number located on the case. If you don't have the trans. case it becomes a little tougher to tell. If the engine has the oil filler tube located in the intake manifold, it is a 1937 to 1939. If the oil fill tube is in the bellhousing area it is a 1940. Most 1937 engines have the tapered type of waterpumps and the front cover to accommodate them. 1940 engines have a longer snout on the crankshaft to accept the crankshaft-mounted cooling fan. There are many other minor differences but you would need to have a complete original engine with the original carburetor and generator to tell. Let us know how complete your engine is and we may be able to better tell the year of manufacture for your V8-60.

if i am reading the 2 answers correctly, one says the 40 block has no hole for an oil filler tube and the other answer says the 40 does have the hole. which one is it as mine has the hole in the bellhousing.

The '40 block does NOT have a hole for the oil spout. It is integral of the valve chamber cover in 1940.

Here is a photo of a 40 cutaway engine. Everything is correct except the fan, it is a 41 Mercury fan. You can see the oil filler tube is in the intake, not the clutch housing. Tom

carcrazy, with all due respect you have it backward. The 40 was the first year that the oil filler was integral of the valve chamber cover. Here's a picture of a proper 1940 cover...

Kubes40, You are correct. I made a mistake. I have a late 1937 Ford V8-60 with full cast iron block which, of course, has the oil filler tube located in the bell housing area.
