Topic: fuel gauge

The fuel gauge on my 1936 Cabriolet has worked in the past but the indicator now jumps to (above) full when the ignition is turned on. I don't know whether the malfunction is in the sender or the dashboard gauge. Is there some way I can easily test which is malfunctioning?

I have the same problem with my 1937 Ford. I hope someone has some advise. Thanks, Norm

Almost always, when a gas gauge jumps clear across the dial when the ignition is turned on, it means the wire between the gauge and the sender is grounded. Old Ford wiring is cotton covered with rubber insulation. Over the years, it crumbles and falls apart, allowing a short to ground. If you disconnect the wire at the sender, and the gauge still goes up, the wire is shorted. If the needle falls back, the sender is shorted internally, and must be repaired or replaced.

Thanks, Supereal. I'll check it out on my 37, and report back.
