Topic: Electric fuel pump

My 6 volt electric pump stopped suddenly today with my car half in and half out of my garage. I am not physicaly able to crawl under the car or under the dash. Are they normally fused? Is there some easy way to jump it? My car is a stock 46 coupe.

They are not normally fused, unless someone put one in the circuit. It is normal for the pump to stop when the correct line pressure is reached. Perhaps the carb float is stuck. Some float needles have a rubber tip that can hang up. A quick check is to pull the fuel line out of the carb, put the end in a container, then try the pump. Of course, it is possible that the pump has a problem and just quit. Some pumps, such as the Airtex, require full voltage to operate, we have found. A low battery or a frayed connection can cause it to stop.

Thanks Bob - son came over and found loose wire at toggle switch under dash. Fixed the problem.

If you suspect it is a problem with current to the pump being cut off it can be jumped to find out if that's the problem with a long jumper wire connected from the battery post to the pump. But, assuming your pump is under the car like most, that won't be easy if, as you say, you can not physically get under the car.
