Topic: 1936 Ford clutch pedal stuck

  The clutch pedal on my 1936 Ford just started sticking in the down position. Any ideas what causes this and how to fix it? Thanks.

  Check the return spring that fits between a groove on the clevis pin and the frame. It is likely it is disconnected or missing. If the pedal bushing or shaft is badly worn, it may be hanging up against the floorboard. If the clutch functions when the pedal is pulled back, it is likely the release bearing and shaft is OK. If not, the transmission will have to come out. Before you do that, pull the floorboard and look at the release bearing and return spring thru the inspection hole to see if there is any obvious problem. Many clutch housings don't have grease fittings for the release shaft and it may be sticking.

  I can see no spring between the clutch pedal and the frame, but I'm not sure exactly where it should be. I see no clevis pin either. Assuming they are missing, where can I buy them? If you know where I can see a picture of this setup, please let me know.

  Do you have a copy of the EFV8 Club's 1935-36 Ford Book. If not, it would be an excellent investment for anyone who owns a '35 or '36 Ford. You can order one here on this website.

If you have a V8 Parts catalog, check the drawings
or exploded component pictures. Good for finding missing parts and re-assembly.

  I am attaching the drawing of the clutch in your '36. Note the spring (7523) and the pin (7533). One end of the spring attaches to the pin, as shown, and the other end of the spring goes to a very small hole in a frame member. Sometimes there is a tab with a hole for that purpose, but not always. Both parts are available from C&G (800/266-0470). The spring is $3, the pin, $1.50.
