The book that I have says that "after moving the rear end and torque tube back remove the transmission". My question is can you remove the transmission at that point or is there something else I have to do before removing it. Since the rear mount is riveted to the frame is there enough room to move it back far enough. Thanks

Once you get the rear end assembly back far enough to disengage the U-joint, support the engine with a 2x12 "pad" and jack under the engine pan. Remove the rear motor mount support cushions, shift linkage, clutch rod, speedometer cable and unbolt the transmission from the engine. The transmission can then be lifted out from inside the front passenger floor area, once you draw it back enough to allow the input shaft to clear the integral clutch housing on the engine. Most modern cars are designed to remove the transmission from beneath the car, but early Ford V8's are provided with a large, convenient removable floorboard section to facilitate removal. The transmission is also very light weight, which also makes it easy to lift it "up-and-out".

If your car has good upholstery be sure to put some covers along with plastic drop cloths on the seats. The chance of getting some grease or oil on the seats is very good when taking the trans out. Actually the best route is to remove the seat.

I like to remove the seat also. It allows you to get a better grip on the trans and keeps it clean. Tom
