I have a 40 Ford V8 that a surging and missing condion. I talk to a man I meet at a car show and ask him evaluate the problem, I am running an electric fuel pump only and I have measured the pressure to be 4.2 pounds at the carb. The guy I talked to said that is too much pressure and I should get a fuel pressure regulator with a output of no more than 2 psi. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

4.2 is on the high side of safe. Some carbs can hold it back, many can't. Ideal is about 3 psi. I'm not a big fan of regulators as most I've seen are not steady. I can understand some surging, but missing isn't usually not too much fuel, but too little, particularly on hard pulls when fuel demand is high. I'd suggest taking the fuel line out of the carb, placing the end in a container, and checking for adequate fuel delivery. If the spark plugs come out sooty, you have too much fuel. If not, it is likely you have an ignition problem such as a heat sensitive coil.

I agree with Super that the electric pumps can and often do exceed the carburetor float valve's limits and a regulator is needed. But, I also agree that an overpressure problem is not likely to cause the rough running that you're having. It's most likely something else. Old Henry (The older I get, the better old looks.)
