  Hello, I have a 1939 Ford V8 with original 2 core radiator and as best I can gather, it has the correct filler on the top left hand side! It has an overflow at the top middle and would run at atmospheric pressure! I've had the radiator out for a minor repair and I'm about to refill it! I'd like to know what best to use, Coolant or inhibitor? Is it necessary to worry about the boiling point and use a coolant with a cooling system running at atmospheric pressure or just use good clean water and a good rust inhibitor? What can you tell me?   Water, with addition of an antirust solution, is always the best coolant. Always use demineralized water. Antifreeze is less efficient than just water, but those of us in places that freeze, use it lest we forget to drain the engine before is gets that cold. If your system isn't pressurized, I'd consider adding one of Skip Haney's valves. It provides some pressure, and lessens coolant loss.

  I agree with Super; add a 4 lb cap and one of Skips valves to the overflow. 4 lbs won't hurt the radiator and will raise the boiling point some, water cools, steam not so much.
We found adding a couple of bottles of Water Wetter to the coolant helps lower the temperature in my coupe. If you live in an area where freezing weather is a possibility, run anti-freeze. Too many engines have been ruined because the owner forgot to drain the water from the system before the weather turned cold.

  Thanks Pauls39, I live in Australia so low temperature shouldn't be a worry. I'll have a web search for skips valve and see if I can find them! Cheers,
