Topic: 6.00X16 to radial conversion

Norm    -- 05-06-2013 @ 3:04 PM
I need to get new tires for my '48 F-1. I want radial equivalents to the 6.00X16 standard originals. I know that Coker sells an "R" version, but they are a bit more pricy than my wallet will be happy with. What size of regular radial tire should I be looking for? 215/85R16 has been suggested. They have the right diameter, but are a bit wider. Comments?

Thanks for the help!

Others will probably chime in on this, but radials generally have a wider tread than a bias ply tire.

Check with Diamondback Classic Radials. If you go to their website they may have a conversion chart that will give you the information you want. If you don't like their prices you can take the tire size info they recommend to any tire store and get radial tires in your price range. I am running radials on my old Fords and love 'em. Would never consider going back to bias ply tires.

I agree with JM, I had Koker tires on my '46 and after less than 20,000 miles I noticed that the outer edges of the tires was dangerously thin. It looked like a serious under inflation problem. I check my air pressure regularly and keep the pressure at the 35 psi recommended by Koker. When I showed pictures of my tires to the Koker people at Hershey they told me that their tires are for "Show" cars and not meant to be driven on. WHAT? This was backed up by several people on another site who were told the same thing. Go with the Diamondbacks!!!

Let me give you my own 2-cents on the subject. I have used Coker Classics for years on three cars and have driven many thousands of miles without issue. The Coker Classic 600x16 radials on my '36 look great and don't have the typical profile of some radials - they look more like bias tires but have all the benefits of radials.

I don't know what Coker told anyone, but my cars are not "show" cars. They are all driven.

I tried tires from another company and had a bad experience with the whitewall construction. Have not had any problems with Coker. Just my experience.

My nearly new Firestone bias 600X16 tires inflated @ 35 psi measure exactly 27 1/2 inche high. How does this compare to the 225/70/16 tire ?

carcrazy    -- 05-08-2013 @ 2:23 PM
  Just doing the math:
225mm/25.4mm per inch=8.858 inches tire section width
8.858 inchesX0.70 tire aspect ratio=6.2 inches tire section height
Tire diameter=2Xsection height+wheel diameter
Therefore the overall tire diameter of a 225/70-16 tire is 2X6.2+16=28.4 inches.

I am impressed with your math but would rather see the measurment, inflated, installed on the wheel on the car. Seeing is beleaving.
