Topic: 1939 Temperature Gauge

The temperature gauge seems to be working fine in our woodie but the "red"indicating marker fluid is not present. It is clear and difficult to read. Is there any way to restore the "red" color?
Thanks.

I have never heard of that fluid losing its color. Usually it dries out and is a bear to remove from the tubes.
If the gauge works, I would suggest you purchase some new fluid. You will need to remove the old before filling. Be certain to follow the directions with the new fluid.

The fluid in original Ford units doesn't fade. Reproduction fluid in repaired units, however, is known to fade to clear. If you are able to replace the fluid, be aware that the same result is liable to take place. Also, the originals were calibrated at the factory with an etch mark on the glass bulb at the location of true boiling point 212ยบ F. Calibration on a reworked unit can be done while the sender bulb is in a pot of boiling water on the stove. This mark, or the re-done mark, lines up with the corresponding boiling mark on the gauge face. On the '38, the actual temperature is displayed, on the '39, the boiling point is indicated by an "H".
