Topic: Transmission question on '39.

Would a 81A shifter housing work in a '39 transmission. Guy that sold me the gear box I have now many years ago told me the '35 case had '39 internal gears but I now noticed the shifter housing has an 81A part #.

Bob, yes, the shift tower for '38 and '39 both carry the 81A part number, but the shift fork itself was changed for '39, and has the 91A part number clearly visible on the fork body itself, visible only by removal of the tower and examining the fork. The two fork assemblies are specific to their gearsets.

By the way, the '39 through '48 gearsets do interchange into the earlier gearboxes, although with a bit less clearance for assemby. All gearsets '39 through '48 are basically the same, but the gears and synchros are not mix-and-match.
The 1937 gearbox carries a 78 part number, and is the same box used through '39.

Alan, so it is possible that there are '39 gears in my '35 case working with the 81A shift tower, but would have to pull the tower and verify 91A shift fork? thanks, Bob

Bob, yes, the shift fork for '39 and later is wider, and won't fit the '38 or earlier. I will say, however, that some guys have tried to grind the 81A fork to fit the '39, but doing so will prove that it won't shift smoothly.

Not all 81A top assemblies have the larger fork so to verify the fork you have is correct do look for the part number. When you have the top off look for the two brass syncro blocker rings.
