Topic: '40 steering gear box question

Flatbob    -- 04-06-2013 @ 6:39 PM
Why does the bottom of this '40 steering gear box look like the one I have on my '36? I thought in '40 the light switch would be on the dash and not through the steering column. Maybe a better question is what goes on the end of this steering column?

My guess is that it could be a 39 steering box. Did you remove it from a 40 or did it just come with a 40? Maybe if it is indeed a 40 it was rebuilt and the only end piece with the tube they had was from an earlier car??? At any rate, yes the hl switch on a 40 is on the dash not the steering column.

On the very end of the column the last piece has no tabs on it that a wire bail would attach to and hold the light switch on the end of the column. Will check for a part # tomorrow.

Here's a diagram from the Green Bible that seems to match your steering gear. The parts on the end that you're missing (from the Green Bible) are:

3642 Spring (lighting switch operating spider)
3643 Spider (lighting switch operating)
3644 Retainer (lighting switch operating spider)
3647 Bail (steering gear lighting switch)
14308 Wire Assy (horn switch)
And that cap that covers all of the switch stuff that doesn't show a number.

It appears from the left diagram that the wire bail goes between the gasket (3593) and the Tube and Plate Assembly (3597). But, the right diagram seems to show a wire to hook the bail to?

Old Henry, is the '40 steering box exactly the same as the '37 as shown in the Green Book? Since the '40 has a dash mounted light switch I see no reason for a wire bail and light switch housing at the end of the '40 column. The part # on the steering box is 01-A which would be for 1940.

Looked closer at the end of the column and I now do see a provision for a wire bail to be attached. Would the wire bail from a '36 work and does the housing that attaches have to be from a '40; is this housing just for the horn wire?
