I had my 42 V8 rebuilt and I'm getting ready to fire it up (need to adjust the lifters first). I've put oil in the engine and turned it over until I got a reading on the oil pressure gage. My question is how much oil gets into the upper part of the engine (where the lifter and valve stems are)? I really don't see any oil there (I'm used to the 60's V8 Ford and Chevy enginew that squirt oil everywhere in the upper part of the engine). David

It takes a while for the oil to get to that area. I just strew a half quart over them all before putting on the intake, then continue with my turning over process.

The valve gallery is oiled when you refill the crankcase. If you got oil pressure on the gauge, you are good to go. The valve trian is oiled via a distribution tube down the center of the gallery which, in turn, feeds the lifters and valve stems. The main bearings, rod bearings, and camshaft bearings are fed in that order by the pump, then the valve chamber.
