Topic: Missing flywheel cover?

Scott40    -- 03-23-2013 @ 3:11 PM
I have a ‘40 Deluxe with a 59AB block. It’s apparently missing a cover that fits between the rear of the oil pan and the front of the transmission. I’ve looked through the Chassis Parts List but can’t find this part in any of the diagrams. What is it called? Does anyone know the part number for it, or where I could find a picture?

Thanks,
Scott

Generally the pan on a 59AB is a one piece pan that has the flywheel cover. It appears that you have the two piece truck pan which were used on the big trucks. Those pans and parts are a little tough to find. You might put a want ad on this site and on the Fordbarn site.

I agree with TJ, you have what's known as a two piece truck oil pan but unfortunately it's missng the piece that covers the flywheel/clutch area. Finding just that missing cover may be difficult but try placing some ads anyway. I bought a complete two piece oil pan last year from an ad on Fordbarn.

Thanks for your replies. I never would have guessed my pan came from a truck. Maybe I should just look for a one piece pan for a 59AB – that should be easier to find, although I hear it’s a bear to remove the pan with the engine still in the car. What was the purpose of using a two piece pan on the trucks?

Scott: The reason for the two-piece pan was to make it possible to service the truck 11-inch clutch, which is too big to fit the opening on at the back of the block/pan
assembly on a "normal" flathead 32-48. The removable section allowed removal by dropping the pressure plate out the bottom without having to pull the pan. I have one on my 38 that has a 59A block because I am running an 11-inch clutch. If I didn't have
the big clutch, I'd opt for a regular one-piece pan.

Thanks, Stroker. I guess my next step is to try and figure out what size clutch I have. If it’s 11 inches, that rules out the one-piece option. Is it possible to determine the clutch size without removing it?

The flywheel looks like the 40 car flywheel. You probably have the 9" clutch.

The 10" and 11" clutch flywheels did not have the extra casting around the pressure plate, shown on your flywheel.

Thanks, Tom. Now at least I know I’ve got a couple of options.
