Don't know if someone else posted this info but a fellow member in my local club has come up with a really great product for freeing up rusted bolts and just general rust removal. His formula is to make a mixture of 50% Naptha and 50% auto transmissiom fluid. This was tested to be about 5X better than the commercial products on the shelf. You can apply in a spray bottle or with a brush or rag. Just remember to keep the solution covered or it(Naptha) will evaporate quickly.

Be careful around naptha. It is very flammable, even when mixed with other solvents. Acetone is doubly dangerous. This message was edited by supereal on 3-23-13 @ 11:57 AM

That's why it's better, because the EPA and the product's lawyers want to do our thinking for us and prevent the use of the really effective components for the off-the-shelf product. Alan

I read an article about testing these different mixes for a better blaster. (In tests a NC State University) it was widely agreed that home brew was better than you you could buy. The winner was ATF & Acetone in aa 50/50 mix. Then the fact checkers said it was true, but 90% Acetone and 10% ATF was even better. 1934 Ford's since 1972

I recently restored a 1947 Atlas lathe that had been outside for 11 years. Nothing moved, and the restoration took 18 months. I found the 50/50 ATF/Acetone solution to be the best. I would add that one suggestion from the Atlas lathe forum was to frequently tap the pieces to be separated with a brass hammer, and to be patient. Electrolytic rust removal was very effective in cleaning the separated parts. Taz Taz
