Hi Everyone, My brother is restoring a 46 Ford coupe and he likes the idea of how it would look lowered 2 or 3 inches. Could you give me some ideas on how this could be done? Are there parts you can buy to lower it? Thanks for any help you can give me. Rob

Well if he is "restoring" it, he shouldn't be lowering it. Having said that, I'd suggest he contact one of the Street Rod supply houses to see what is currently available. In "the day", we used lengthened spring shackles, reversed spring eyes, and dropped axles to "slam" or "rake" our early Fords. There is no functional benefit to doing so, only aesthetics if your brother is so inclined. On this Forum, we get excited if a cotter pin is installed backward, so you may not get a lot of sympathy.

Get a catalog from Chassis Engineering. Their site is chassisengineeringinc.com. They have reverse eye springs and other parts that will change the car safely. Too often modifications produce problems in handling if not done correctly.

Dan, The cotter keys... Left to right or right to left? I always get confused on that. And what if the hole runs vertically? These details are so important! Alan

Alan: There are indeed "standards" (at least within the aviation community, and the FAA), regarding the proper installation of cotter pins. I have a long history of being haunted by a misplaced cotter pin, on my 38 which I would be happy to share with you privately, as it is too gruesome to share with the Forum.
