I need to access the light switch on a '39 deluxe which is located on the steering wheel (under horn button) How do I remove the horn button so I can get at the switch? Thank you.
Phil

The horn button is attached to a rod going all the way down your steering shaft to the light switch just beyond the steering gear. It is held on by a wire bale. Move the bale to the side and you have access to the light switch in the metal can. You don't need to remove the steering wheel.

But if you want to remove the wheel, there is a horse shoe shaped clip in at the end of the rod enclosed in a tubular device with the tangs on the end. These tangs control the position of the light switch. Push this device in (toward the steering wheel) to remove the clip and then you could remove the horn button.

Don't get in a hurry to remove the bale. You've got tons of grease and dirt on the bale and can that must be cleaned off before opening to the "clean room" inside.

I could have spent a lifetime trying to figure that one out and ruined my horn button in the process. I will try this tomorrow. Wow, I am learning how truley different a '39 is from a '40. Can't thank you both enough.

39 topless, It may be helpful to you, and to us, if you describe why you're removing the switch. Is the switch bad? Are you removing the steering wheel? Is your car an enclosed car or an open car as hinted by your name. I ask because there are certain precautions you must take in order not to damage any of the components that you remove.

My car is a '39 convertible coupe. I want to access the inside of the steering wheel housing because when the steering wheel is turned, it makes a terrible squeeking noise. I'm hoping there is something under the horn button that can be greased or something. The light switch works ok. Thanks, Phil

I'd suspect the rubber "bushing" under the wheel in the steering column. It has likely dried up into a rock hard cylinder. You can obtain a kit to replace it at C&G. Ask for B-3517-K, $17.50 800/266-0470

Topless. The long shaft that Juergen references has to be removed in order to replace the bushing. Put your top down before you remove this rod as it must not be bent at all. If it gets bent, you cannot straighted it enough for it to operate the light switch properly.
The following ebay number is for a bearing that has been designed and made by a Ford V8 club member, Dan Brusegard from Minnesota. It's more expensive than the one that Supereal mentioned but it, an actual bearing as opposed to a bushing and is far superior to it. I've done three of them now and it really reduces the steering effort for your '39.
Here's the item number to his ad on e-bay but if you have a club directory, you can contact him directly.
ebay number, 111028007828 .
I hope this helps.

Thanks a million,

Ok, I ordered the bearing from Brusegard. His ad convinced me that this was the way to go. It'll be great if this also helps with the hard steering.
Thanks so very much, Phil

Installing the bearing was easy with the excellent instructions and "tool" that came with the part. Now I have another quick question. When I re-install the horn button/light switch, do I need to have the switch in a certain postion on the steering wheel or is there only one way that this will go back together? Thanks, Phil
