Topic: 42 hubcap question

I'm in the process of restoring a '42 Tudor Ford. A while back I bought a set of what looled like NOS hubcaps for my 42 Ford at a swap meet. The other day I took them out to put them on my freshly painted wheels and they are too little! I measured them and they are 7 1/2", and the original was about 8 1/4". What do they fit? I wonder who made them?

Look on page 28 of the C&G catalog cgfordparts.com It shows 19 different hub caps. Your ruler obscured the center of the hub cap in the photo, so I couldn't match it with the catalog. The caps were made by several different vendors. The '42 cars carried the 21A-1130. I am assuming the your wheels are correct, which isn't always the case.

I just checked an old dented cap that came off my car. The dimension at the point you have the tape is approximately 8 1/8" This cap will fit both the original 16" wheels and the later 15" wheels that will bolt onto 42-48 brake drums. I bought a new set of hubcaps from Drake I believe and they fit without a problem. I understand that the 42 hubcap was used on pickup trucks up to 48. Is it possible that it was not really the same and you have a pickup truck hubcap?

I still have the original hubcaps I took off the car and they fit just fine on my rims. Look at the picture of the original on the right and the repo on the left. The original is definetly larger. The car also had one 47-48 truck hubcap (as pictured in Carpenter's parts catalogs, item K, 6A-1130-A) and it has the same size back as the 42 car hubcap.

The caps you bought were made for aftermarket wheels that have a smaller center on them. The V-8 parts vendors sell the correct new repo caps for your Ford wheels.

  Thanks, that makes sense.
