The rear axle nut should as tight as you can get it. We use a socket wrench with a piece of pipe as a handle extension. Mark the axle end so you will know where the pin hole is. After tightening the nut, you can back it off only enough to insert the cotter pin. For the front, after packing the bearings with fresh grease, install the hub with the keyed washer and tighten the nut as far as you can, then back it off until the hub turns freely. First tightening the nut forces the grease into place so the final adjustment is correct. No torque readings are mentioned as each place is dependent upon the circumstances. .

The 'V8 Times', Sept/Oct 98 Issue, pages 46 and 48, quotes several Ford Service Letters and later corrections. The final direction on tightening rear axle nuts reads: "tighten nut 356074-S to 200 to 220 foot pounds; then continue tightening to the next castellation providing final resultant torque does not exceed 275 foot pounds." JM
