Topic: engine leak question

  In restoring my 42 Ford I am getting close to starting the engine (was completly rebuilt, has Edelbrock Al. heads). I put water in the radiator to check for leaks and after a few small leaks I noticed that there are several head bolts that have small amounts of water oozing out of them. What's going on?

  Did you use new studs?
Did you use a thread chasing tap to clean the threads in the block?
Did you use a sealer like Permatex no 2 on the threads of the studs that go into the block?
Did you tighten all of the studs so that no threads were showing above th block surface?

Failure to do any one of these steps can lead to water leaks around the studs. Bars stop leak may cure the problem, but I would bite the bullet and do all of the recommended steps before adding the stop leak.

  Thanks, someone else rebuilt the engine. Don't know what they did, so off with the heads and redo the studs.

  I had the same problem with a MODEL A, I backed off the nuts and wound some string around the stud and retorqued the head, solved the problem,
also a GM PARTS man, a friend of mine told me every GM product on the assembly gets 2 stop leak pellets, you can buy them there,about the size of a quarter and about 1/2 inch high,
you do not have to use all the Bars leak.just make sure it is mixed up well
also maybe running the engine and getting it up to operating temp and retorquing the heads,
just make sure no water goes into the crankcase ,
and do not use antifreeze for breaking in the engine in till you see no leaks,just water, distilled water is best,
