Topic: Ford rear end

  Hi,
I'm trying to identify a rear end I own, and would like to find parts for. I have been told it's a '56 rear , specific to this year passenger car only. I'm also told it could be a "49-"56. It has 3.78 gear ratio, a 10 spline drive pinion, with no pinion retainer, and the ring gear is 8"-plus, not the more common 8" or 9". The rear housing is round, not oval.
I appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks.

On this Forum, we mostly concentrate on the '32-'53 Fords. You may have better luck on the "shoebox" site. If you can find a metal tag on the axle, it will help to identify and decode the info. These tags were common on those years.

You may also want to try this site that is part of Fordbarn.com. (Late Ford V8 54+) You would need to join to post there but not to read. Very simple procedure to join.

The 1949-54 Ford chassis parts and accessories catalog gives different numbers for the rear ends. It identifies them as 49-50 except station wagon, 49-50 station wagon, 51 except station wagon, 51 station wagon,52-54 except station wagon and sedan delivery and 52-54 station wagon and sedan delivery.

The carrier assemblies are different for the regular fords and the station wagon/sedan delivery. The "regular" Ford rear end is round with 10 splines. My book does not list a 3.78 It lists a 3.73 (stamped 11/41) for 49-51 stick-no overdrive and 3.54 (stamped 11-39) for 51-54 with FORDOMATIC

I don't have a post 54 up book but I think the rear ends were similar prior to 57 as 54 but the ratios may have changed. We used to swap out the pumpkins with ease when the rear ends failed.
