I have the waterpump apart right now and it make no sense that the ceramic seal polished face seals against the steel? does this require polishing, all the images of the break sown show the phenolic washer between the pulley and outside of the pump, then shows the ceramic and spring inside of the impeller but it has no ceramic washer or element to seal against the cas part of the pump inner bushing location to seal??

When the water pump was made, the body surface where the seal seats is polished, with the seal tensioned against it with a spring. It is designed so the meeting is lubricated by a very small amount of coolant in the gap, mostly contained by a close fitted, lubricated bushing surrounding the shaft. Newer pumps use a ceramic seal, while the originals had a carbon seal. When a skilled rebuilder, such as Skip Haney, rebuilds pumps, the seal face in the body is renewed. The new turbine style units feature sealed ball bearing instead of bushings, which must be precision reamed if replaced.

Thank very much exactly what I was looking for, I work as a Millwright at a nuclear plant, I got a buddy can make me a tool for resurfacing this face and polishing it to the bearing bore, I;ll check the machinery handbook for generic face details Cheers
