  Hi, Is it possible to electrically or mechanically convert an 80# oil sending unit to work correctly with a 50# gauge?

  There is no need to try to convert an 80# sending unit to work with your 50# gauge. The difference in the sending units is in the diaphragm that changes the point gap. There is an adjustment cam inside the unit, but it only changes the high reading by about 5# in the 80# unit.

The 80# sending unit should be used with the 80# oil pump and the readings will be about half scale on the 50# gauge. If you use it with s 50# oil pump, the readings will still be about half of the true pressure, but the pressure will be lower.

With 10W30 oil, at 30mph, an 80# setup will typically read near the center of the 50# gauge and the 50# pump with an 80# sending unit will read just below the 1/4 mark.

  If you want to try to adjust the reading, try small low ohm resisters in series with the wire from the sender to the gauge. I did it with a temperature gauge that read too high. Go to Radio Shack or some place similar and get some 1/4 watt resisters and experiment. Start with 100 ohms and see what happens. Temporarily install a cheap mechanical gauge along with the electrical gauge for comparison.

  I run a 80lb oil pump with a original gauge and have no problems for 15 years.
if you use the 80lb pump make sure you get the correct pick up for it,

If your dash unit is reading about max (top mark), the suggestion 51f1 made will do it but I would use 10-ohm resistor because a 100 will probably hardly let the dash gage move. Radio Shack sells the 10-ohms 2 for $2.49.

For a '35 21-stud with the stock dash gages, I have a BorgWarner S-334 sending unit with a 10-ohm resistor from Radio Shack as 51fl has suggested. Will read a smidge over middle mark at 45 mph. $11.99 for the S-334 and 1.25 for the resistor. A little over $13 for all of it.

The S-334 has the correct thread to go straight into the block of the 21 stud. Clears the foot feeder etc, and the regular wiring harness just hooks up as usual.

Don't remember if my oil pump is a 80 or 50. Probably 80. It was installed years ago and I can't remember. Dennis Carpenter and C&G both have the 50#, $50, but I would think you need to know what pump to make it worth the $50.

I have a mechanical oil gage that I could put in to see what the "middle mark" is sometime. Take the driver floor board out and you can get to the sending unit easily with an open 9/16".

Why not install a 50# sender? I obtained an after-market unit last year through Dick Spadaro which works very well with the original gauge (verified with a mechanical gauge). - R.J.
