Today i start my 1938 ford, it runs fine but the engine temperature meter is not working. Whats wrong here ? i followed the line and there no cracks. With the rebuild the soldering was loosened and we soldered this again. can i rebuild this meter or do i need a new one ? This message was edited by arj on 2-12-13 @ 5:36 AM

Looks like you soldered the tube closed. You may b e able to repair it, sure worth a try, but rots a ruck. "New" is not gonna happen. Find a gauge taken off by a hotrodder, or check the want ads. You can test a gauge at a swap meet with a cigarette lighter, just don 't get it too hot! You'll have to pay an arm and a leg, just make sure it works before you lay out the money. Alan

is there some liquid in the tube or so ? the soldering was loosened on the dash side, closed to the gauge. a friend of mine thinks there is some liquid in the tube 9ether or alcohol?) I see that Macs have complete new sets but not cheap..

Yes, there is a red liquid in the original, and there is a supplier of a liquid that soon fades to almost clear, not worth the trouble for the result. Hint for when you find one: Never allow the glass tube to be lower than the sender bulb, or you'll get air bubbles. To repair one with air bubbles, attach the straightened out line securely to a broom stick, and swing it round rapidly to settle the liquid back to the sender bulb. This, along with heating and cooling in a vertical position, may take several attempts to correct, but never open one up for this repair. Alan
