The Ford parts book lists " Butler finish-Nickel plate" so I guess it's probably some sort of unpolished nickel plating that was applied without surface prep to the part. Or perhaps it was plated and used just as it came from the plating bath. Any plating experts out there?

Kube, thank you very much. Since I had to remove the floor to replace the very worn transmission mount on my 46, there wasn't much left of the original pedal cushions. Steve

Butler Finish is a standard plating finish that can still be found today on plated hardware. In general it is either nickel or chrome plate that has a brushed finish so that it does not have the luster of a polished finish. To the best of my knowledge the prep steps would be the same. Just that the piece is gone over with a very fine wire wheel to give it the final finish. The Ford finish number is S-22 for Butler Finish.

A rough example of Butler Finish can be seen on the backside of original chrome bumpers where no polishing is done, leaving the surface texture of the base metal.
