Topic: 51 truck ,change to original steering wheel

  h*llo ,this is my first post on this forum although i,v been a member of the club for almost 30 years ,.i,m shipping a 51 i/2 ton f1 truck from the states to the u.k,it should land in about 6 weeks ,its pretty original but with a smaller wood steering wheel ,i intend to buy a repro from probably d carpenter(wouldnt be able to find an original wheel over here ) and would like to know if its a straight forward swop or if would need to buy anything else,thanks for looking and hope for some response,jim.

  Unless the original steering shaft has been replaced or modified, you should be able to remove the old steering wheel and replace it with the new one. Remove the nut and pull the wheel off. If the shaft has been replaced or modified, there are new shafts available. You will probably also need horn parts for the new wheel. The picture below (in the upper right corner of the page) shows the parts needed. The support shown in the picture goes under the nut that holds the wheel on. The contact is held on the support by the retaining spring. The second picture is a picture of the wheel installed.

You really need to get rid of the smaller wheel as the '51 truck is hard enough to steer with the full sized wheel.
