I would like to have the front brake drums on my 35 car turned. The breaking area of the drums is full of ridges. Does anyone know the maximum dimension they can be turned without making them to weak. thank you

35gal, I had the same problem with my 37. They were grooved BAD in the front and I had them turned. The guy that did it for me told me not too worry as there was plently of metal left. I hope this helps you a little bit. Don

The original diameter is 12 inches. The standard answer to your question is that it is unsafe to turn drums more than .060 In the "real world" there are lots of drums that are turned beyond that amount, mostly due to the scarcity of replacement drums for the wide bolt pattern cars. Measure the current inside diameter of the drums. If they have already been turned, which is likely, any further cutting can be dangerous. Some drums can be cleaned up with a light cutting, but be sure that there is a vibration damper band applied during the operation to ensure a smooth result. In my opinion, any shop that says "don't worry, there is plenty of metal left" is suspect.
