Topic: 33' cabriolet dash finish

FFracer    -- 12-22-2012 @ 7:59 PM
  Hey all,
My Cabriolet's dash board is the same color as the car body, it seems every picture I have looked at shows the dash in a wood-grain or marble finish. So is my body colored dash incorrect? or maybe the marble or wood-grain dash was an option?
I like the finish just not real sure on how to do it.
Just wondering,

Thanks.
Chris

Like all '33 deluxe model passenger cars, the dash and window mouldings on your cabriolet were originally woodgrained with a burl walnut grain. It's not easily done well DIY. There are suppliers to the hobby with the equipment to duplicate the original grain pattern perfectly.

LOL! I don't think I would try that myself. I tried a search but couldn't find anything.
Any direction as to were I would go would be appreciated... i am in So. Cal.

Thanks again,
Chris

I've always done my own woodgraining with printers ink, press wash and clear urethane. However we don't show are cars for judging. I even woodgrained my Standard 34 because I liked it. (Only the Deluxe models came with woodgrain)
Here is a link to a place that does high tech woodgraining. http://www.woodgraining.com/
If you PM me after 1/1/13 I can send the printers ink method instructions. It's kind of like finger painting, you keep at it until you find the grain you like, even burl. It's an inexpensive DIY was to get a fresh look.

Pretty Cool site, Actually learned something! Does seem kind of expensive unless your gonna paint a bunch of stuff... Although I would imagine having it done professionally would be a few $$$ too.
I did email them, I believe 3w2 is correct, Burl Walnut, I didn't see a Burl Walnut pattern on there site.

As always,
Thanx
Chris

Hi, if this is the pattern you need its the Butt Walnut Pattern. It was used on many make and models. A very popular pattern from early on.

Also as the base colors and ink colors were changed the manufacturers would change the names of the woodgrain patterns even though they used the same printing plate. Like the straight grain pattern/Plate has many names, Golden Mahogany, Walnut, Maple and so on.

FFracer, if you are a V-8 Club member you can look up Bob Kennedy in your club roster. He lives in Whittier,Ca. and is one of the best people to do woodgrain in your area. He knows which grain to use on each year. His work is excellent.
