Topic: 1936 brakes

Currently, I have a '36 that has no brakes. Since the driving season is over I want to use the downtime to go through and rebuild the mechanicals. To help things out I have a set of "floaters" for a '35-'36 which I want to install during the rebuild. Here is my problem: what type of brake shoes should I use with floaters namely, woven or molded? I asked this question on Fordbarn and got a mixture of answers. Hopefully, I can get a more definitive answer here!!

Thanks for the help.

Tom

Tom, it's my opinion that the woven shoe works better. It's a softer shoe and "bites" into the drum better than the molded shoe. Years ago I had an original 38 that had the woven shoes and it stopped as good as hydraulics.
If you bought the floaters from Flathead Ted you might ask him what he suggests for shoes.

I replaced the molded shoes on my '34 about 3 years ago with woven shoes and was amazed at how much better the car stopped. I did not use 'Flathead Ted's' floaters but did purchase a much cheaper floater kit from MAC's. Like trjford8 said, "it stopped as good as hydraulics." I just did a brake job on my '37 and used woven shoes on it's cable operated brakes as well. Woven shoes are the only way to go, in my opinion.

I see that fellow V8'er Dante has a set of woven shoes in our classified.
